How accurate are NOAA predictions? ›

A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-day—or longer—forecast is only right about half the time.

The best models are correct roughly 70-80% of the time. This is why experts estimate that marine forecasts are relatively accurate for the next 2-4 days.

While NOAA releases seasonal outlooks much closer to the time frame they're predicting (such as releasing the winter outlook in mid-October), the forecasts are still subject to changes for accuracy, while the almanacs are set in stone once they're published.

The five-day forecasts have been expanded this year to cover seven days. For the Atlantic in 2022, these forecasts were pretty reliable for five-day genesis forecasts of 10 – 70%. For example, when NHC gave a 50% chance a tropical cyclone would form within five days, one actually did form about 53% of the time.

The accuracy of hurricane forecast models can vary significantly from storm to storm.

Marine weather refers to the atmospheric and wave conditions at sea. Like onshore weather forecasts, marine weather will cover wind. Unlike onshore weather, marine weather isn't limited to predicting if it will be rainy or sunny. Instead, marine weather accounts for swell, fronts, and wind.

After analyzing the data, it was concluded that AccuWeather produced the most accurate weather forecasts. This partially disproved the hypothesis. The Weather Channel was not as accurate as AccuWeather, but it was more accurate than Dark Sky.

Today the accuracy is around 97%. The biggest improvements we've seen are for longer timeframes. By the early 2000s, 5-day forecasts were “highly accurate” and 7-day forecasts are reaching that threshold today. 10-day forecasts aren't quite there yet but are getting better.
